Rotenstein, Küsnacht ZH
Since 2024, a species-rich natural area spanning over 7,000 m² has been under development in a meadow at the edge of the forest, above the town of Küsnacht. The project includes a species-rich flower meadow, a dry meadow, a pond for amphibians, hedges, and small-scale structures such as piles of old wood and sand patches. Among other things, this project aims to support the “adonis blue,” a butterfly classified as vulnerable in the Swiss Plateau. During the first monitoring in June 2026, it was determined that the ecological value of the area had improved from an initial 3.7 to 5.0 (high ecological value).
The area complements an existing flat bog as well as several dry meadows and hedgerows, and optimally connects these habitats with the nearby forest.
In addition to Naturnetz Pfannenstil, the project partners include the municipality of Küsnacht (landowner) and farmer Roger Müller (tenant).
